Geological description and occurrence of certain rocks

Geological description and occurrences of some rocks:

GRANITE
  • It is a plutonic, light coloured  igneous rock
  • It is the most common rock
  • Two  essential mineral constituents of granite are quartz and feldspar
  • Mica and hornblende are also found in granite
  • Granites are generally coursed to medium grained holo-crystalline and equi-granular rocks
  • Types of granites are distinguished on the basis of relative abundance of some particular accessory mineral in them.
  • Granite is the most widely distributed igneous rock in the crust of the earth.
  • They occur chiefly as deep-seated intrusive bodies like sills, boses, stocks and phacoliths
  • Granites find extensive use in architectural and massive construction where they are found in abundance.
  • These rocks have been used extensively in monuments and memorials, as columns and steps and as flooring in buildings.
