Disaster prevention, mitigation and management

DISASTER PREVENTION, MITIGATION AND MANAGEMENT

DISASTER A disaster is a sudden, calamitous event that seriously disrupts the functioning of a community or society and causes human, material, and economic or environmental losses that exceed the community’s or society’s ability to cope using its own resources
Disasters can be man-made or natural. Natural disasters cannot be prevented as they occur due to forces of nature. They can only be mitigated or managed. However, man-made disasters for example wars, industrial accidents, excessive use of toxic pesticides, accidents, etc can be easily prevented by practicing due diligence and moderation.
In case of any disaster, it is imperative that the community take proactive measures much before any emergency occurs. This can be made possible by organising regular drills in order to respond to any emergency. An important role is played by the Operational Impact Analysis Disaster Recovery Plan. The roles and responsibilities of the members in the Disaster Recovery Team should be clearly defined without any overlap. The Disaster Recovery Management Team consists of Crisis Recovery Management Team, Internal Impact Analysis Team, External Communications Team, Communications Team, Recovery Design Team and Recovery Evaluation Team.
DISASTER MITIGATION Disaster mitigation refers to minimizing the effects of a disaster. Disaster mitigation involves measures that improve or minimize the risks and hazards through proactive and predetermined measures. The main aim of disaster mitigation is to reduce loss of life and property by reducing the impact of disasters. The goal of any mitigation effort is to minimize human loss and financial costs occurring after a disaster.
