DISASTER PREVENTION, MITIGATION AND MANAGEMENT DISASTER A disaster is a sudden, calamitous event that seriously disrupts the functioning of a community or society and causes human, material, and economic or environmental losses that exceed the community’s or society’s ability to cope using its own resources Disasters can be man-made or natural. Natural disasters cannot be prevented as they occur due to forces of nature. They can only be mitigated or managed. However, man-made disasters for example wars, industrial accidents, excessive use of toxic pesticides, accidents, etc can be easily prevented by practicing due diligence and moderation. In case of any disaster, it is imperative that the community take proactive measures much before any emergency occurs.
